           BLACK SEA                  Sumela Monastery - Uzungöl - Ayder - Kaçkar - Zilkale - Kaçkar




  SUMELA MONASTERY
The monastery is on the cliff of Karanlık Mountain. It is 17 km to the South of Maçka, Trabzon. The Orthodox Church has been considered one of the most important holy places in Anatolia. According to a legend, it was built by two monks who came from Athens in 385. The monastery was closed down in 1923 when the Byzantine Greeks left Anatolia. It became a protected area in 1927, the monastery was damaged by nature and human in time. The fire which broke out in 1930 caused the roof and the wooden floors to burn. Although only the stone walls remained as a result of the fire, this 4-storeystone structure has a splendid façade overlooking the valley. The restoration of the monastery is still continuing.  


UZUNGÖL

The lake is 99 km away from Trabzon and 
19 km to the village Çaykara. It is at an altitude of 1090 m. The lake standing in the middle of a valley was formed by rocks that blocked the mouth of the Haldizen Stream. The traditional old wooden houses in Serah village contribute to the natural beauty of the area. The lake is 1 km in length, 500 m in width and 15 m in depth. There are trouts and carp in the lake.





AYDER PLATEAU

The plateau is 19 km to the Southeast of Çamlıhemşin,Rize. It is at an altitude of 1350 m and covered with spruce and beech forests. It is the first stop of mountaineers who will climb the Kaçkar Mountains. The plateau has
 developed a lot since it was declared to be a tourist area. It is also famous for the hot springs (50 C). They cure numerous illnesses such as rheumatic, internal diseases, gynecological diseases and dermatological illnesses.




ZİL KALE 

The castle is on the way to Çat from Çamlıhemşin. It is assumed to have been built towards the end of the medieval age and to have been used as a guardhouse. It is on top of a rock 100 metres above the Fırtına River bank. The walls are 2 m thick. Two of its small cannons are displayed in the Trabzon Museum. 

 



KAÇKAR MOUNTAİN

The Kaçkar Mountains are some of the few places in Turkey where there are both glaciers dating back the Pleistoseneage and actual glaciers. The Kackar Mountains, the highest point being 3937 m., attract mountaineers from all over the world. It has two important glaciers on its north side. They were declared a National Park on January 1st, 1994
